So I'm thinking about getting a few IP cameras. I see them available all over the place, and I wonder if any of these units are "standard" -- if I came up with an old PC and ran some DVR software on it, would I be able to select different brands and mix and match them. I'm not looking for a cloud based solution or some off-brand base unit, I'd just like to set up a dedicated PC and record on that, maybe remote in with my Android phone to check up on things....

... or am I way off base here and would be better off getting a "system"?

All IP camera connect via the same standard, but some IP cameras may have propriety software for viewing.

DVR software usually covers all known brand cameras and then some, but using an older PC may limit the number of cameras that can be live at any one time. An IP camera becomes live as soon as it's connected to you router.

Edit: I use a dedicated DVR.
