Hey,

I'm working as a teacher in a reputed public school in Toronto. Not many people realize that even within a school there are many items that are a potential hazard to the health of students. We use carpets to cover the floor in the entire building. The carpets usually bring comfort and style to the personís mind. But in reality, carpets can pose significant health risks and hazards if they are not cleaned regularly.

What should be done? We have taken necessary action to reduce the exposure to carpet toxins. We are using vacuum cleaners to clean the carpet surface. I have heard that a vacuum with a well sealed High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filtration system that can do a much better job of cleaning the carpets. (http://www.janitized.com/benefits-hepa-filters-allergies-bacteria) So, please share your suggestions regarding vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters and its benefits. Thank you all in advance!

There is no vacuum cleaner that will make a public area safe. At my school, the carpets were removed for exactly that reason.

If your school has a limited budget, then replace the carpeting over time. Start with the area that receives most traffic, usually the library.

No doubt it's a tough call, but children's heath must take precedence.
