DEs such as KDE run at about 500 MB of RAM on idle, while a distro running LXDE typically uses around 100 MB of RAM on idle. But when using applications on computers with a decent amount of RAM, this difference gets dwindle.

I'm really fine with 16GB from far 2012 on my desktop

I would want to have at least 4 gigs, but it depends very much on what you're running.

The RAM is not so much sufficient to handle multiprocessing. It's better to have atleast 2 GB of RAM.

RAM is cheap these days. Most computers have gigabytes of it.
