While researching I stumbled upon the Z-Wave serial API specification, which some of the Z-Wave usb sticks seem to comply with. As far as I understand, when plugged into a machine (for example a Linux system) simple binary frames can be read written onto a virtual usb device file.

Is there something similar for ZigBee?

My goal is to build a very simple application which just logs some temperature values but I don't want to use one of the (for my purpose overengineered home automation systems. In my naive mind I just use an existing library or write it myself to access the basic functionality for discovery and data aggregation.
But I don't want to be bound to one usb stick of one company. If I am correct, then the ConBee II for example, requires its own library and some deamon to be executed in order to work.

I am asking especially for the unified ZigBee interface since I seem to find more devices supporting ZigBee than Z-Wave.

Home my question makes any sense.
