Hello.
Have you considered to install a mortice electromechanical lock? If yes, I suggest the models with power supply via deadbolt. Usual electromechanical locks provide both keyless entry using swipe cards and standard mechanical opening with a key (in case of power loss or electronics fail). Power supply through the deadbolt allows installing a control cable through the strike plate in the door frame. Such type of installation doesn't spoil the door exterior. Here is an example (the left picture is what I mean):

ATTENTION! You need to define what type of lock you should use: fail-safe or fail-secure. Fail safe models unlock without power and fail secure models stay locked at a power loss. In some cases there are strict Fire Dept requirements for entrance door locks.

That won't work for French door where both doors are hinged.

It might be hard with an old door. If you are willing to replace the door i know conservation construction and anderson both make doors which offer this feature.
