Hello,

I'm looking for a low cost proximity aware outlet. My kids constantly leave their desktop fans on all day while they are at school.

I think plugging them into a simple proximity-aware smart outlet would solve the problem.

Can someone suggest one for me please?

how do you intend to track the location of your kids? Cell phone?

One of two ways... Geofencing, just like my Heatpump theromstat uses..So it knows where my phone is geographically and makes schedule/temperature changes automatically...

Or using Bluetooth proximity.

How about buying simple infrared light switches (around $ 10 at Home Depot) and using it to control the fans? You may need to cover its daylight sensor with a piece of black tape. You want sensor/switches compatible with LED lights - they contain a relay. Triac based switches may have a problem with the fan inductive load. Or run the fans through a timer. They don't take too much power, so fifteen minutes here or there makes little difference.
Why make it simple when it could be complicated with geofencing and similar schemes? :-)

I was thinking something like this:

https://techcrunch.com/2013/12/15/zulis-smartplugs-turn-your-phone-into-the-proximity-based-switch-for-the-connected-home/

But they are sold out and I can't seem to find something similar.

The fans are tiny desktop fans plugged in behind dressers so a wall wart to me is a quick and simple solution.

The equipment is going to cost you a lot more than the electricity you may save. And don't forget the equipment consumes power as well, including battery charging. Anyway, remember the KISS rule.
