I am looking for some ideas for wire-in dimmer with remote. The dimmer will not be visible. Either go into junction box or in ceiling nearby. I am driving a 50W halogen light. It has a WAC transformer.
If you go with the Skylink module. You will have to buy a remote to control it. The manual for it does not show a remote in the modules package. They may have a kit with a different part number. It can also be a dimmer by changing a setup parameter. Not too sure even at On and Off the WAC transformer will be OK with it.
The Torchstar web site did not have a downloadable installation guide but the web photos show it is fairly easy to install and it is strictly On and Off.
Ether one needs the Line Neutral and Load connection in the electrical box it is installed in.
I have a WAC transformer that was on a dimmer for several years (not Insteon). I believe it is: EN-1260-R-AR http://www.wac[ restricted ]/product/electronic-remote-transformerIt drives a 50W 12V halogen light
Looks like the Insteon is rated for Incandescent only. Which woudl limit its use today :-)
The ones for incandescent loads are Forward Phase Control. Turned On after the AC wave starts to go from the Zero Crossing. Probably a triac control. That once turned On will not turn Off until the voltage is below its holding voltage.
The ELV is Reverse Phase Control. On at Zero Crossing and then is turned Off during the AC wave after it has started. Not a triac as it has to be turned off during the AC cycle.
I will look at your links.
Have you looked at the original dimmers part number? Maybe it is not an ELV.
I suspect Smarthome is covering their bases. By saying Incandescent Only. Some devices that are not incandescent maybe fine on their dimmers but if not. We told you so.
The rc6000R instruction sheet. Indicates it is for incandescent loads. Not specified but it is probably a Forward Phase Control.
WAC is probably covering all bases by saying ELV dimmers. It may work fine on a Forward Phase Control module like the RC6000R and not others. That way if it does not work. They have an answer to why it does not work.
never mind. I added the device without removing it from HL. I did the trick. All is well now. Also resolved an issue with a toggle switch. @SeanM: many thanks to point the new file. I thought I had the latest.
