I have a smart plug that I can control via Alexa or Google. How is this possible? The socket was initially set up using Alexa but I can use the same voice command in Google to operate the light. Does Alesa and Google both interface to the same app that does the control?

It has been my experience that the echo and google home must be separately configured. I have never seen a device configured for alexa to work with google, absent setting up in google.

Both Alexa and Google talk to the plug’s cloud service. If you have an iPhone, you normally have to approve a connection to the plug maker’s web service by signing into that account from your Alexa and Google app. I understand Android phones are now searching your phone for apps and automatically offering to connect to any services for which you already have the app installed on the phone.
