The vampire power of hubs and automated switches / bulbs is not significant when compared to HVAC systems or other appliances.

Z-Wave and Zigbee devices can run for a few years on a single battery, so that gives you an idea of how much power the wireless chipsets use (not much).

A home automation hub is basically a small, low-powered computer that will use between 1 and 15 watts. 15 watts is not much, especially since you will only have one in your home.

That being said, I think automating lights is more about convenience than saving money. Home automation hardware is expensive, and the amount of electricity used by efficient bulbs is relatively cheap. If your family is even reasonably good at turning off lights that aren't in use, you will probably not make back any home automation investment.
