I have a bathroom light and fan that are wired together from one switch. I'd like to be able to control the fan independently without installing a new wire to it. Ideally, I'd like a timer function too. This would require a remote device in the fan box that turned it on and off, based on a wireless signal from a switch.

I think they make remote modules that install within the fan, then replacing the switch with a remote control. I am not sure that this addresses your timer requirement.

I use insteon home automation devices for ceiling fans. The insteon solution would be a keypad switch and a module (fanlinc) that installs in the ceiling box. To incorporate a timer, you would need also to include some type of brain that speaks insteon.

Other types of home automation devices have similar devices, but I have no first-hand knowledge of those.
