Hi
I simply want to control a few light switches (say 2 for now), and am looking for a recommendation on the technology based on these criteria:
- I want to control with linux scripting (so open source)
- Do not need internet or Alexa or any of that
- Does not need smart hub - just interface to linux
- Cheap Cheap Cheap
I've done some digging and have narrowed the technology to zwave or zigbee (unless anyone has any other thoughts).
So my last hurdle is price. I see that I can get a USB zigbee interface on (say) aliexpress for 6-7 bux CDN. I'm happy with that price as I'm used to paying 6 bux for 60 cents of electronics ;-) However I've searched all over for a zwave dongle and they are all around $60 CDN (10 times the price of zigbee). I've seen dongles that do both zigbee and zwave and as soon as there's a whiff of zwave attached to it, the price goes up by a factor of ten.
So is zwave a deadend with everything costing 10 times as much as zigbee? |
